Fresh compositions and world premiers are sprinkled throughout a big night of jazz. In advance of his visit to UNSW for the Forces in Music Masterclass on 2 August, the Jazz Orchestra will play Mike Nock’s beautiful composition ‘Indifference’ that exemplifies his creative use of sophisticated jazz harmony. New works from the Jazz Composition Ensemble draw variously from mainstream and modern jazz, modal music, graphic notation, game pieces, reggae and even Jane Eyre. The Advanced Jazz Ensemble are deep into the 1960s and will work with the sounds of modal harmony, an energetic and interactive way of improvising.
