Exploring the Singer’s Formant
The phenomenon known to classical singers as squillo and to acoustics researchers as the ‘singer's formant' is a large peak in the 2.5-3.5kHz region of some notes sung by classically-trained singers. In practical terms, it can be heard as a ringing tone several octaves above the note the singer is attempting to sing. Experts in solo classical vocal music generally encourage its use only in opera and frown upon its use in genres set for more ‘intimate’ settings, such as lieder. But is there any practical implication to such selectivity, or is it merely another case of what is ‘right and proper’?
